Since being introduced to music, Al Strong continues to work diligently in mastering and refining his musical passions. Strong's musical upbringing began at an early age, where he was exposed to his grandmother's in home church services and organ playing. While growing up in Washington, DC, Caribbean, go-go, orchestral, and jazz music allowed him to develop an affinity and respect for a variety of music disciplines. This is evident in his unmatched sound and rhythmic approach. Furthermore, Strong's lyricism is deeply rooted in traditional jazz, taking influence from great such as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Charlie Parker. many of these influences can be heard on his debut album LoveStrong Vol. 1, released on January 8, 2016.
Al Strong's debut album LoveStrong Vol. 1, uniquely showcases his distinctly robust sound and musical versatility. This emerging trumpeter, arranger, and composer offers a carefully crafted piece of work that is an inviting body of music to all, appealing to both new listeners of the jazz genre as well as jazz aficionados. The collection features 10 tracks, including 6 original compositions and 4 contemporary renditions of jazz standards.
Strong ingeniously displays his intuitive musical command from cover to cover, incorporating progressive jazz, soul, gospel, and afro-beat grooves. The album takes the listenership on a journey through the music, a journey that ecompasses stories of adversity, triumph, mystery, and love.
In addition to having the pleasure of performing for artists such as Branford Marsalis, Aretha Franklin, Clay Aiken, and Linda Eder, you can hear Al Strong's sound on a number of other projects available for distribution. These artists include The Foreign Exchange, Yazarah, Soul Understated featuring Mavis "Swan" Poole, and Camp Lo, along with others. Strong also balances his love for music performance with adjunct teaching responsibilities at North Carolina Central University, as well as festivals, shows, and summer jazz camps with his non-profit organization, The Art of Cool Project.
